Happy New Year! 2010
Sinomiopteryx sp.
Order:                Mantodea
Family:
Thespidae Giglio-Tos, 1919
Subfamily:
Pseudomiopteriginae
Genus:              Sinomiopteryx Tinkham, 1937
Species:           ????

Mantis of this genus has three different species, namely
•        Sinomiopteryx brevifrons Wang, 1991
•        Sinomiopteryx grahami Tinkham, 1937
•        Sinomiopteryx guangxiensis Wang, 1991
All three species have only been recorded in no other countries except for China. The species currently in my stock is originally from
central of Yunnan province, but its identity is still being investigated at the moment. This tiny species look similar to the ground mantis
(L. minor) at birth but appear to have bulkier body. The hatchling is not very active and prefers to stay still on the same spot for
extensive period, but do not show any sign of hunger even 3 days after birth. However, the small front legs have no problem catching D.
melanogaster. The hatchlings require misting and appear thirsty whenever the surrounding temperature increases above 85F. It is
interesting to see how this species grow into larger nymphs.
