September and October are generally the best months for collecting mantis in the lower region of the USA. Most of the mantis in the wild are either
adult or close to adult so praying mantis are more ‘visible’ and easier to spot around these months.
On my recent few collecting trips in Texas I have been collecting mostly all adult Brunneria borealis and Thesprotia graminis, except for Stagmomantis
carolina where I have encountered mix of both nymphs and adults. Maybe S. carolina prefer to mature later in the month.
My next trip is coming this Friday, I will be flying to Tucson, AZ and stay at GreenValley for the entire weekend. Mainly looking at finding Yersiniops sp.
and Litanuetria sp., but wouldn’t mind netting any mantis species at all.
Later in October, I will be flying down to Estero Llana Grande State Park and Bentsen Rio-Grande-Valley State Park to collect and study the mantis
species existing on both parks. It has been known that both areas are natural habitat of the Texas unicorn mantis (Phyllovates chlorophaea) so I would
like to visit both parks before my collecting permit expire on November.
There are still plenty of updates on the mantis I would like to post up here but it has been a very busy period for me. I hope to have another update
before my trip to the Lower Rio Grande valley of Texas. So don’t worry if you don’t hear from me for the next few weeks, providing that I don’t get lost
near the border on all my collecting trips (Yes both the Lower Rio Grande valley and Southern AZ are very close to the border!)
